Abstract Adenovirus pneumonia is becoming one of the most important parts of community-ac⁃ quired pneumonia. Severe adenovirus pneumonia was thought to occur in children and immunocompe⁃ tent adults. Outbreaks and sporadic cases of severe adenovirus pneumonia in immunocompetent adults have been reported more recently. However, it has not been studied well because of the limited data. To gain comprehensive attention and enhance the level of diagnosis and treatment, this review will focus on the progress of the severe adenovirus pneumonia in immunocompetent adults regarding the following as⁃ pects: etiology, spread, epidemiology, pathogenic mechanisms, clinical characteristics, pathogenic detec⁃ tion and treatment.
